  Thallus squamulose, ±crustose centrally, ±rosette-forming, 4–5 cm wide, closely appressed to substratum on thick mat of blue-black rhizohyphae. Lobes 0.1–0.2 cm wide, incised to centre, stellately radiating, apically ±fan-shaped, running parallel and adjacent. Upper surface faintly striate, often with ±granular secondary lobules, leaden grey. Lower surface ecorticate, pale buff, densely covered in blue-black rhizohyphae. Apothecia sessile, laminal, rounded, 0.2–1 mm wide; disc ±flat with paler proper exciple and irregular secondary squamulose thalline exciple, red-brown; hymenium I+ blue. Ascospores simple, ellipsoidal, 15 × 5–8 µm, hyaline.
     
  Known in Australia only from one collection in a forest at 500 m in N.S.W., on bark; also in coastal areas in northern North Is., New Zealand.
